The University of the Incarnate Word School of Osteopathic Medicine (UIWSOM) – San Antonio, TX.
What other educational credentials do you have?
Bachelor’s of Science in Microbiology from the University of Oklahoma, Master of Biomedical Science, from UIWSOM.
What are your particular clinical interests and why?
Preventative medicine, because I have always believed in the old adage “prevention is better than the cure”. As cliché as it sounds, I have desire to truly see people well and walking in wholeness. My goal is to help a lot more people live and not die from preventable diseases whenever possible.
Why did you choose Family Medicine?
I have always had a passion for serving people and Family Medicine present a unique opportunity to help patients, at times intergenerationally, regardless age, sex, or disease process. We are often first line of defense to averting medical tragedies. Additionally, Family Medicine requires amassing a vast amount of clinical knowledge on an array of medical issues- and I love the challenge. Family Medicine is one of the specialties that truly fosters long lasting physician-patients relationships and promotes continuity of care.
Why did you choose the Community Based Family Medicine Residency program?
Because I can relate to a great majority of the people within the population of patients we treat. I grew with very little access to healthcare and I am empathetic to some of the socioeconomic disparities of health that a lot of our patient experience. Additionally, as a medical student at UIWSOM, we were exposed very early to some of the challenges that patients in the community face in order to be able to afford basic healthcare. So I decided not only did I want to give back, but be a part of the solution by helping provide excellent, compassionate, quality, and empathetic care to those less fortunate.
What are your hobbies and interests outside of medicine?
Working out, reading (novels or self help books, whenever I have free time) traveling, playing pool, playing basketball and spending quality time with loved ones. Hopefully some time in the near future I will be able to rent a winnebago and travel across country and visit as many states as well as US national parks as possible. Definitely on my bucket list!
